Chapter 11

It was hard trying to sleep when there was a ghost outside the house. Thankfully, her bumping around didn’t continue into the night. Hank had said she heard that we were going to get help for her and now, she’d wait patiently. He and Mama had talked late into the night in hushed tones, and I had the distinct feeling they were arguing.

The sunlight streaming through the window was a glorious sight. Louisiana during the nighttime hours could be scary, but after what I’d witnessed, I had become downright terrified and barely slept a wink. Derek had tossed and turned next to me, but we didn’t speak. I had a feeling he was a little freaked out as well.

By the time I went downstairs for some coffee, Hank had left for work. Mama sat in the kitchen by herself, staring out the sliding glass door with her forehead pinched in worry.

“Are you okay?” I asked as I poured myself a cup.

“Yes, I’m fine. A little rattled, but I’m okay.”

“That’s understandable. Last night was scary. What’s Hank’s plan to help Kara?”

“He wants to bring in a Voodoo priestess, while I think we should have our pastor come over.”

Now I understood the hushed, angry tones I’d heard. Mama believed Voodoo was evil, while Hank had grown up with it his whole life and considered it another religion. I’d learned bits and pieces growing up and found the religion fascinating. “Are you afraid the priestess is going to invite bad spirits in?”

“Yes. Perhaps the pastor can release Kara’s soul without all the Voodoo nonsense.”

“Maybe you can have both come over?” I asked. “We all want the same thing.”

“You’re right,” Mama said, smiling. “Such the diplomat. I’ll go see Pastor Matthew today and ask if he’d be willing to help us out.”

“Derek and I are going to Cathy’s Catering,” I said.

“Please be careful.”

“What’s she going to do? Beat me with a spatula?”

“You never know. Caterers also have knives and silver trays. In the movies when someone gets hit with a tray, they always go down.”

We giggled as Debbie came in. “What’s so funny?”

“Just being silly,” Mama said. “What’s on your agenda today?”

“Carla and I are having a Facetime call in a few minutes so I can walk her through the recipe for the strawberry donuts. Apparently, I made a grocery list on the recipe card and she became confused on what ingredients were actually supposed to go into the donuts and what ingredients were merely on the list. She had to throw away the whole batch, so we’re going to go over it and have her write out a new recipe card which, according to Carla, I shall not touch. Ever.”

“That’s too bad,” Mama said. “Such a waste.”

“Yeah, it’s my fault. Me being here has only proven that I need to get more organized. I can’t keep everything filed away in my noggin and expect to rely on others.”

I sipped my coffee as I stared at Debbie. She’d always been a control freak until Carla had started working for her.
